To properly activate windows 10, you have to first upgrade from an activated version of windows 7, 8, or 8.1 and then after successful upgrade, do a clean installation of windows 10. FYI: you can choose to skip the product key when installing windows 10 with clean installation and it will be activated automatically if you previously upgraded to windows 10 from windows 7, 8, or 8.1 on same computer.
